QQI Minor Award Level 5 - Further Education & Training

The course is relevant for any person who is responsible for health and safety in their workplace or who requires a recognised qualification in Occupational Health and Safety.


It is designed to provide learners with the skills and knowledge to promote and maintain safety and health in their place of work.


Increasing employees’ participation in health and safety also has positive benefits for a company in terms of less workplace accidents, absenteeism, etc.

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements however learners should preferably have a good working knowledge of English, have a leaving certificate or equivalent qualification and / or relevant life and work experiences.

    Hazard identification, risk assessment and control measures in the workplace


    Principles and procedures for good housekeeping

    Health and safety management

    o   Working with equipment

    o   Personal protective and respiratory equipment

    o   Use and disposal of hazardous materials and waste

    o   The working environment and related risks and controls

    o   Safety sign

    o   First aid boxes

    Accidents in the workplace.


    Manual handling and ergonomics.

    General health and wellness promotion in the workplace



All assessments are carried out in accordance with QQI regulations:

      Assignments (2)                60%
      Examination(theory based) 40%


A QQI Certificate of Achievement will be issued following the validation of results by QQI and the appropriate credit under the National Framework of Qualifications will then be obtained by the candidate. 

National Framework of Qualifications: D20165, Course is a QQI level 5 component award.

As the subject content equates to the standard 3 day Safety Representative Programme each participant will also receive a Safety Representative Course Certificate from Western Management Centre on successful completion of the course.
