Manual Handling Instructors Course

QQI Minor Award Level 6 - Further Education & Training

 
The course is designed to equip individuals with the knowledge, skills and competency to deliver manual handling training. The five day course consists of 6 modules leading to a QQI Level 6 Special Purpose Award. Achievement of this award will enable the learner to transfer to other appropriate programmes leading to awards at the same or lower levels on the National Framework of Qualifications. Learners who achieve this award may transfer into the Level 6 Special Purpose Certificate in People Handling Instruction.
 
The HSA regulations require that all Manual Handling Instructors become QQI certified by 2012.

Programme Objectives

To enable learners:

  • To gain an understanding of the main components of current Health & Safety Legislation
  • To learn about the anatomy of the spine and back care
  • To identify the main risk factors for back injuries
  • To gain an understanding of the techniques for Manual Handling Risk Assessment
  • To gain an understanding of Ergonomic Principles
  • To introduce participants to manual handling principles and techniques
  • To develop the qualities necessary for effective manual handling instruction
  • To introduce participants to techniques for effective preparation for manual handling instruction
  • To develop skills for the competent delivery and evaluation of manual handling training
  • To develop skills for better presentation and communication
  • To practice the skills of course preparation and delivery
  • To demonstrate their understanding of the process of preparing and delivering a manual handling course

Assessments

 
All assessments are carried out in accordance with QQI regulations.
      Assignment  20%
      Examination(theory based) 20%
      Skills Demonstration 60%
 
 

Award

A QQI Certificate of Achievement will be issued following the validation of results by QQI and the appropriate credit under the National Framework of Qualifications will then be obtained by the candidate. 

National Framework of Qualifications: Course is a level 6 Special Purpose Award which  qualifies as 10 credits towards QQI level 6 Certificates and is a recognised module within the National Framework of Qualifications.
