Manual Handling Instruction-QQI Award- Level 6 (6S0242)


The HSA regulations require that all Manual Handling Instructors must be certified. This course is designed to equip individuals with the knowledge, skills and competencies to deliver manual handling training. Learners who achieve this award can transfer into the Level 6 Special Purpose Certificate in People Handling Instruction.

            The course focuses on the theoretical and practical aspects of manual handling, risk assessment and the key training tools and skills required to effectively deliver manual handling courses. 

            Learning Objectives

            Learners will:

            • Gain an understanding of the main components of current Health & Safety Legislation
            • Learn about the anatomy of the spine and effective back care
            • Identify the main risk factors for back injuries
            • Gain an understanding of the techniques for Manual Handling Risk Assessment
            • Gain an understanding of Ergonomic Principles
            • Understand manual handling principles and techniques
            • Develop the qualities necessary for effective manual handling instruction
            • Acquire effective preparation techniques for manual handling instruction
            • Develop skills for the competent delivery and evaluation of manual handling training
            • Develop better presentation and communication skills
            • Practice course preparation and delivery skills and techniques
            • Demonstrate their understanding of the process of preparing and delivering a manual handling course

            All assessments are carried out in accordance with QQI regulations:

            • Assignment                                 20%
            • Examination (theory based)      20%
            • Skills Demonstration                  60%

            NOTE: A learner must pass each of the assessments in order to achieve certification.

            Certification & Award

            A QQI Certificate of Achievement will be issued following the validation of results by QQI and the appropriate credit under the National Framework of Qualifications will be awarded to the learner.
